Parent Update 5 February

5 February 2021

Dear Parent

Parent Update

I would like to thank you for your continued support this half term. We are striving to do the very best we can for students under these challenging circumstances and, as I wrote last week, we continue to be humbled by their enthusiasm for learning and their effort in their online lessons.

Volunteer Opportunities

Our Local Governing Body are seeking to appoint additional governors to support and challenge the leadership team here at Stanchester. You can find out more about being a Governor here: Governors (stanchester-academy.co.uk) or contact the school office to discuss this with me in more detail. We would welcome interest from parents and members of the community with varied experience including those from outside the education sector. An LGB formed of members with a range of experience and perspectives is certainly the most effective when it comes to driving school improvement.

Please see an additional letter from Peter Elliott (CEO of BTCT) regarding the appointment of Trustees to the Board.

Online Attendance

In response to a number of requests in the recent parent survey we have set up an automated daily communication, starting on Monday 8 February.  All parents will receive a daily text message informing you of the number of sessions your child has attended that day; attendance is taken for engagement with the live element of the lesson. This will be out of 6 sessions (five lessons and tutor time). When there is no live element, pupils are considered present as they will be completing their assignment.

We hope that this system gives you the information you need to be able to have an open dialogue with your child around their engagement with online learning and, therefore, their commitment to learning. This includes the opportunity to praise and reward students who are attending 100% of their online lessons.

Student Well-being

A reminder that we have created a Stanchester Wellbeing Group on Microsoft Teams. The aim of this group is to share useful resources to support you while your family are learning from home. We will also offer weekly ‘drop in’ sessions with our Mental Health Leads, Ms Gale and Ms Cunningham, from 2.45pm – 3.30pm on a Tuesday afternoon. If you would like to join the Stanchester Wellbeing Team, please log into your account and join using this code: 5k1tb08. Urgent safeguarding requests should still be sent to Teresa.Priest@stanchester.co.uk as per our Safeguarding Policy.

IT and Microsoft Teams Support

IT support is available to all students by contacting the BTCT IT Helpdesk at: bct.helpdesk@educ.somerset.gov.uk or calling 01935 676 255 to leave a voicemail and we will help as much as we can. When contacting the helpdesk, make sure you leave your name and contact number.

On Wednesdays from 3-3.30pm there is an online technical support drop-in session for anyone who is experiencing technical difficulties with online learning. To join the session, simply click on the link below.

For safeguarding reasons, your camera must be switched off and these sessions will be recorded.

Finally, next Friday (12 February) is a staff INSET day therefore school (including online learning) will be closed to all students. Take care and have a lovely weekend.

Yours sincerely

Tamsin Grainger
