Headteacher Letter 7 January

7 January 2022

Dear Parents and Carers

Headteacher Update

Firstly, I would like to wish you all a happy new year and I hope you all managed to stay healthy and safe over the Christmas period.

With regards to COVID precautions at Stanchester Academy, we are continuing with ‘Amber’ measures that were put in place on our return after October half term. These are likely to remain in place for the foreseeable future due to the Omicron variant and will definitely be in place until Wednesday 26 January in line with the guidance from Nadhim Zahawi, Secretary of State for Education and Public Health England. The health and safety of our pupils, their families, staff and the wider school community is always our number one priority. Thank you for sending your young people in ready for the new term, we have large numbers of students bringing in their own face covering and clear understanding on the need to keep each other and the school community safe. The students’ attitudes have been exceptional on their return.

This term, we must focus on supporting our Year 11 students and the raising attainment plan to help them close any remaining gaps in knowledge and prepare them for their exams. We are 15 weeks away from this exam window starting and need to ensure our students are equipped and confident to do their absolute best. Remote learning has been going well for students over the last two days. One of our aims is to avoid closing Year 11 again, for the rest of the school year. This would mean the younger year groups would need to close, should staffing numbers fall, as they did before the Christmas break.

For Year 11 from next week, we will be offering afterschool sessions three nights a week, many of these will be open to all students and some will be by invitation only. More detailed information on our full suite of raising attainment plans will be sent out at the start of next week. This will include details about the Year 11 parent and student event on Thursday 13 January. With 75 days to go until the exams, the more support and opportunity for further study we can give our young people the better. For any parents who cannot collect children from afterschool revision sessions, there will be a bus provided for students to access on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings if needed.

Enrichment will be starting back up next week with PE sessions, Science club and school show rehearsals back in full swing. We have some really exciting events planned for all students this term from STEM sessions to Musical Theatre workshops. We will continue to send trips out this term, with updated risk assessments and strict covid rules in place.

These plans and extra efforts on the part of our staff all serve as a timely reminder of why, at Stanchester Academy, we love what we do. We love that we are entrusted with helping to shape your children’s futures. But we also recognise that with it comes considerable responsibility. We know, as a staff, that it is our responsibility to do whatever we can to provide the best possible education for our students. It is why we are so demanding, both of ourselves and of our students. But we remain confident that what is happening at this school will prepare our students to push themselves to be the best they can be and will open doors to allow them to choose where they want to go in future.

Thank you for your continuing support of the academy and for all the well wishing we have received at the start of term. I’m looking forward to this term, and the progress we will make for all our young people.

Yours sincerely

Miss E Forward
